Excerpt from Chapter 1

On Saturday evening, September 7, Lori and Ray Winter were driving to Lori’s class reunion held at a resort hotel by the ocean in their town called Seabreeze. The small community was nestled between Del Mar and La Jolla, a mere 15-mile drive from San Diego. Amid a curving coastline, Seabreeze boasted rocky shores to the east and a sandy beach to the west. The Winters lived only three miles farther inland. Theoretically, they could have walked.

Lori said, “I know you’re not thrilled about attending but please try to be charming for my sake.”

Ray took his eyes off the road for an instant and, glancing her way, replied, “I’ll be on my best behavior but I don’t understand why we are going. We avoided your 10th and 20th reunion, so what’s so special about this one?”

“To refresh your memory, during the first one I was giving birth to our twins, and the next one was held while we were vacationing in Europe. As for what’s so special about today’s reunion, it’s the fact that Angie has organized it and is even paying everyone’s way. You well know that Angie was my best friend in high school and still is.”

“So what prompts dear Sister Margaret to be so generous with her money? And more to the point, isn’t she supposed to have given up all worldly goods?”

“Don’t be sarcastic, Ray. When her parents passed away this year, she inherited a fortune. I happen to know that she is donating the bulk of it to the convent, but this reunion is sort of a good-bye to her past. She is scheduled to leave for work in a foreign mission soon and may never return to the US.”

At this point they had reached the hotel, which ended their conversation.
